Characterization
Atticus Finch: Atticus Finch is the father of Jem and Scout Finch. He is calm and seems very wise when it comes to raising his children. He is also a thoughtful and forgiving man who rarely gets angry at anyone even if they mistreat him. Atticus also understands that people aren’t perfect and have many blind spots. Atticus has taught Jem and Scout good moral values through their years and has even taught Scout to stop fighting. Jem and Scout’s opinion of their father changes as they learn that he was “the deadest shot in Maycomb county.” In the novel, Atticus’s most impressive feat is when he stands against racial injustice. For this reason, he’s a very important and heroic character. In the novel, Atticus is a lawyer who has to defend Tom Robinson, an African American, who’s being accused of rape. Atticus tries to defend an African American even though the odds are stacked against him. ¨We Know all men are not created equal in the sense some people would have us believe-some people are smarter than others, some people have more opportunity because their born with it”(pg 274). Atticus fully understands that different status or race affects the natural rights everybody is born with. This is what drives Atticus to be equal to everyone even African Americans like Tom Robinson. That is what makes him such a brave character in the novel.
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem is one of the main characters and he is the reason that the book starts with a flashback. It all started how Jem Broke his arm and how it happened. I had guessed it was when they were trying to find Boo Radley but it wasn’t but Jem had an important role and that was to protect his sister. On Page 45 Jem Says, "SPIT IT OUT!". This shows that how Scout says that she got it from one of the radley's trees Jem says that because it has germs. |
