The quote stated, proves how medicine was impacted during the Great Depression. Many hospitals didn’t have the right medicine to cure the diseases that were passing through during this time. A disease that roughly damaged the villages/towns was poliomyelitis (polio). This disease is highly contagious and caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. In the 1930s, time and money were wasted in developing ineffective nasal sprays, nasal sprays were the “remedy” for polio. Many American’s did not realize that Franklin D. Roosevelt, was attacked by poliomyelitis in 1921. There was also a large outbreak that spread across the northeast. In 1932 Philadelphia was hit with this outbreak. Many people struggled in during this period, there was also The Great Depression going on. The Klu Klux Klan (KKK ́s) were harming many African American families during this tough period of history.
