Racism, Medicine, and Jobs in the 1930s
“Weakness is what brings ignorance, cheapness, racism, homophobia, desperation, cruelty, brutality, all these things that will keep a society chained to the ground, one foot nailed to the floor,” Henry Rollins, an American singer and songwriter. The meaning of this quote is that if people are being racist to other people or don't believe that anything is possible, it brought weakness which will keep everyone in the same spot and not be able to move forward. Many lifestyle events in the 1930s were tragedies such as racism, medicine, and jobs. For example, nine young African American boys beat down and put in jail, they were accused of raping two white women on a train. On the other hand, jobs were tough in the 1930s and many men did not have jobs since The Great Depression and they were forced to live on the streets. Besides, people’s health was at risk because cures certain diseases were not found. In the 1930s many tragic events happened.
To start, racism impacted many people in many different ways, in 1931 nine teenage boys were guilty of raping two white females on a train. These innocent boys were put in prison for 20 years, for doing something they didn't do. After 20 years the boys were finally free, Charlie Weems(19), Ozie Powell(16), Clarence Norris(19), Andrew(19) and Leroy Wright(12), Olen Montgomery(17), Willie Roberson(16), Haywood Patterson (18) and Eugene Williams. These boys were beaten in prison for something they didn't do. They were guilty of raping two young caucasian females, the women told the judges that they were raped onboard on a train. According to the article, “Blacks faced unemployment of 50 percent or more, compared with about 30 percent for whites. Black wages were at least 30 percent below those of white workers, who themselves were barely at subsistence level.” (Shelly Pinckney). This quote proves how much African Americans were mistreated. During The Great Depression, many people lost their jobs and homes. But, blacks struggled with this the most, it was easier for whites to get a job since almost all of the towns are full of caucasian jobs. Although, blacks didn't have as many opportunities as the whites had. Black men would go on the streets and have a huge poster saying that they need a job. Also, white men weren't just getting one small loaf of bread to bring to their families they were getting luxury dinners, etc. Even though, African Americans had to stay in a line for hours, just to get a palm-size loaf of bread for there family. Many African Americans were mistreated and disrespected, but they never gave up on fighting for their freedom.
To begin with, medicine impacted the 1930’s in various ways. “Large increases in deaths from cancer, respiratory diseases, and heart attacks occurred during the Depression.” This quote was stated by the article, Encyclopedia.com. The quote stated, proves how medicine was impacted during the Great Depression. Many hospitals didn’t have the right medicine to cure the diseases that were passing through during this time. A disease that roughly damaged the villages/towns was poliomyelitis (polio). This disease is highly contagious and caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. In the 1930s, time and money were wasted in developing ineffective nasal sprays, nasal sprays were the “remedy” for polio. Many American’s did not realize that Franklin D. Roosevelt, was attacked by poliomyelitis in 1921. There was also a large outbreak that spread across the northeast. In 1932 Philadelphia was hit with this outbreak. Many people struggled in during this period, there was also The Great Depression going on. The Klu Klux Kian (KKK ́s) were harming many African American families during this tough period of history. The quote ́as shown above stated how many families struggled trying to get remedies
Finally, jobs were very difficult to find during this period of time. ̈ ̈The unemployment rate, only 3.2 percent in 1929, rose to 24.9 by 1933 -- more than 12.8 million people were out of work that year.” This quote was stated by Catherine Armstrong, The quote shown above talks about how the employment rate had dropped severely during this time. Many African American men, especially fathers and husbands would travel a large amount of miles away from their family just so they could find a job, to be able to bring food to their family. The quote shown below shows how much employment has dropped between the 1930's. ̈During The Great Depression, banks failed, businesses closed, city streets were desolates, families lost their homes, and unemployment in the rose to nearly 25%.¨ -Encyclopedia. 70% of African American workers were jobless in 1934, up north 25% of cacusian men were jobless in 1932. Cacusians and African American workers had to be separate, they were not allowed to be in the same unit or get paid the same amount. African Ameicnas would get less money than cacuasians. During the time of the Great Depression most Africana American families would only get a palm size loaf of bread that would have to work with your whole family for the whole day, they would eat this as breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Many of the quotes shown related to how many families suffered trying to find jobs so they could have something over there head and food.
Ultimately, during the 1930's many families were hurt with the many events that's overcome racism in the 1930 ́s. Racism was a huge issue during this time, in 1930 nine African American teenage boys were accussed of rapping two cacusian girls, these boys did not know who those females were. On the other hand medicine had some downfalls during this time period.Large increases in deaths from cancer, diseases, and hearts attacks happened during The Great Depression. Many doctors did not have the remedy to cure people. Finally, jobs also were a struggle during this time. In 1934, 70% of African Americans were jobless, many families traveled far away from their homes to find jobs.To conclude, many African Americans fought for there
Freedom, although there were many unfair laws they still wouldn't give up. They lived a cruel life, but at the end of the day they had each other and their families.

Violence in the 1930s
Cate Blanchett, a famous actor, once said “Violence and racism are bad. Whenever they occur they are to be condemned and we should not turn a blind eye to them. '' This quote relates to Al Capone because he was a very violent person due to the fact the he killed many people. Also, the quote refers to the Hindenburg Explosion because that relates to violence due to 35 people who died during the explosion. In addition, violence continues to correspond with sports because in the 1930s sports did not have functional equipment, so it was very dangerous for an athlete to compete. Al Capone, the Hindenburg explosion, and sports were all very violent elements. Therefore, in the 1930s the tragic events such as the Al Capone murders and the Hindenburg Explosion devastated the people, but sports kept them together.
To start, according to Biography.com, Al Capone killed over 100 people during his time as a gangster.( Biography.com pg1) This information relates to violence do to the fact that he decimated so many people during his life. According to Britnica.com Al Capone was the brains of the Saint Valentine's day massacre(Britannica editors pg1). The event was so deadly that seven people in a rival gang were killed with a machine gun. Capone was sent to Alcatraz jail on an island. The jail was the most secure jail in the world at the time. It was almost impossible to escape Alcatraz. Al capone was one of the most violent gangsters in the history of gangsters. Al capone killed so many people during his time as a gangster.
Second, The Hindenburg Explosion was one of the most deadly explosions of all time. The Hindenburg was filled with Hydrogen, which is a flammable gas. According to History.com that lead to the Hindenburg exploding and 35 people dying. This was a scary and deadly event during the 1930s.(History editors pg1) According to airships.net “Luckily 62 of the members on the Hindenburg survived.”(grossman pg1) The airship was the largest dirigible ever built at the time. That means it was the biggest airship at the time. The Hindenburg disaster was caused by electrostatic discharge and then it blew up. The Hindenburg explosion was one of the most violent events of the 1930s.
Lastly, sports were dangerous to play during the 1930s. They did not have as good equipment as they do now in the 21st century. According to Weebly.com What the professional Football players would wear In the 1930's, their gear was not a protective as today.(weebly editors pg1). There were more deaths in the 1930s than in the 21st century due to the fact that there is more padding on equipment and more protective gear. The first world cup was in the 1930s, and it was dangerous because a lot of people got hurt from the cleats they used to wear. A lot of athletes left their respective sports to go fight in wars and they never came back to play the sport because these sports did not really thrive during the 1930s. Baseball was the biggest sport during the 1930s, and football wasn't even invented yet. Basketball was also popular in the 1930s but baseball was way more popular. The second most popular sport in the 1930s was boxing, and it was so dangerous that 2 people died during the 1930s while boxing. None of these sports were safe to play due to the fact that there wasn't technology so there wasn't safe equipment.
All in all, there are many reasons why the Hindenburg Explosion was a tragic event in the 1930s. Second,People all around America died due to the Al Capone murders. Even the sports in the 1930s were violent. As Cate Blanchett said “Violence and racism are bad. Whenever they occur they are to be condemned and we should not turn a blind eye to them. In conclusion the 1930s were violent, but they ended up conquering the violence.

Racism, The Dust Bowl and, Sports in the 1930’s
American poet, Robert Frost, once said, “The best way out is always through.” Frost explains that you have to go through situations in order to do better. In the 1930s people suffered from racism and the effects of the dust bowl; but, sports took the eyes of many fans around the world. Sports made the 1930s superior. African Americans in the 1930s had no justice, not even in their own neighborhoods. A group of people who called themselves the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) used to bomb black schools and churches. In addition, the dust bowl made everyone evacuate their own homes and farms because of the environmental disaster. This caused people to lose their jobs, so they became poor. On the other hand, sports created a peace around the world. For instance, the Yankees won four World Series from 1936 to 1939. Even though most people could not afford tickets they could tune in on the radios. Also, Joe Louis’ boxing fight remains most important and most talked about ever because he won the World Heavyweight Championship with a knock out in the first round in 1938. Boxing, baseball, and many other sports kept the 1930s thrilling. Despite the fact that racism and the dust bowl affected the 1930s, sports flourished.
To begin, racism affected the 1930s immensely. Racism caused people not to feel safe not secure in their own neighborhoods. During the 1930s there was white supremacy everywhere. Bombings occured in black schools and churches and overall violence against black individuals. For instance, on k12academics.com it listed that in 1934, in Gill, Massachusetts Elliott Speer murdered by a shotgun through the window at Northfield Mount Herman school. This shows that groups such as the KKK showed no mercy and they even shot African Americans at schools. Racism also affected the 1930s because African Americans did not have the justice that white people did. For example, white people would not hire African Americans because of their color. This was unfair for black men and women who were just trying to find a job to support their own family. In local jobs white men would fire blacks from jobs just because of the way they looked. In the 1930’s any store, resturant, bar, ect. would be filled with all whites working, white people would be embarrassed or even ashamed to have a black individual working at the front. Most black employees who worked were working in the back mopping or cleaning bathrooms or kitchens. African Americans would be hired as maids or assistants so the whites would feel overpowering and in control. White people were always favored, black individuals did not have any justice. The 1930’s were also affected by racism because of segregation. African American children could never go anywhere near white children, to the white individuals, black people were gross and horrifying. The segregation was over the top, black children were not allowed to go to the same school as whites. The white supremacy did not care about black children and their education. There were many occasions and situations where black students were very smart and did not have any opportunities to do anything because of their skin color. Therefore, this is evidence of how racism affected the 1930s.
To start, the dust bowl caused many horrifying disasters in the 30s. The dust bowl caused families to separate. According to britannica.com it states how the dust bowl caused people to evacuate their homes. Families would often separate because of their health. Some families would sacrifice themselves and leave because it was very dangerous. The Dust Bowl swept across the country. Families were forced to leave the region because they were at risk of dying. Many families were upset and sad because they werent even sure if they would be able to live. Another reason the dust bowl caused problems is because it made people broke. Thousands of people were losing jobs, it was caos. Farmers were the most at risk, their own lands were being destroyed and blown away by wind. The wind was so rapid it blew away all of the farms. The drought caused the lands to dry and crumble. Farmers became broke because they didnt have anything to. Everything was a giant disaster. Finally, the dust bowl caused peoples lives to be in danger. The dust was so strong and thick because it caused people to choke. The dust went into peoples lungs which made it hard for them to breath. Thousands of familes saw their own kind die because they couldnt even walk without dust going into their lungs. People who survived walked with towels around their face and mouth so they wouldnt die. This is evidence why the dust bowl was such a horrifying disaster.
Despite the fact that racism and the dust bowl affected the 1930s, sports flourished. Racism hurt many people in the 30s. African Americans had no justice and could barely make their own choices. The dust bowl cause many people to suffer. It made families split, people broke, and it also endangered the lives of many. But, sports were able to bring everyone together. Sports also made people happier and entertained people. Sports made everyone hopeful through all the rough times.
